Buffalo Trace released the 2005 Sazerac 18 Year Old, an 18-year-old Kentucky straight rye, in its fall 2005 Antique Collection beside Eagle Rare 17, George T. Stagg and the first barrel-proof William Larue Weller. It was the only rye in that year's collection; Thomas H. Handy joined as a second rye in 2006.

Buffalo Trace Distillery & Aged Rye Heritage

Frankfort 1987 or Earlier Distillation

Distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, Sazerac 18 Year Old is the age-stated rye entry in the annual Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Carrying the legendary Sazerac name from 19th-century New Orleans coffee house culture, this 2005 release represents the final single-rye BTAC allocation prior to the introduction of Thomas H. Handy in 2006.

Profile & Strategy

Release Context
I

Strength & Structure

Sazerac 18 is proofed to 90 (45.0% ABV) rather than bottled at barrel strength, making it the age-stated rye in a collection otherwise built on cask-strength whiskey. Eighteen years in charred oak stand behind that number, and the 2005 release is the last to carry the Antique Collection's rye slot alone.

II

Strategic Position

Buffalo Trace issued this bottle in the four-whiskey Antique Collection of 2005, which introduced the barrel-proof William Larue Weller and released George T. Stagg three times, in the fall and in two spring lots. The Sazerac 18 was that collection's only rye. From 2006 through 2015 the Sazerac 18 came from a single batch of 1985 rye held in stainless steel tanks, where aging stops.

Distillation-Year Disambiguation

A Sazerac 18 listed as 2005 is not always this bottle. Rye distilled in 2005 went into much later releases: the 2023 release distilled across 2004 and 2005, and the 2024 release, distilled in March 2005 and March 2006. This bottle is the fall 2005 release, sitting between the 2004 Sazerac 18 from a three-bottle set and the 2006 bottling from Warehouse K's first floor.

Records & Assurance

Production Methodology

Buffalo Trace aged, bottled and released this Kentucky straight rye. Under its 18-year statement the whiskey spent at least 18 years in oak, which puts its distillation in 1987 or earlier. The Sazerac 18 releases from 2006 through 2015 came from one batch of rye distilled in 1985 and moved from oak into stainless steel tanks, where aging stops. This 2005 bottling precedes that run. Under US rules a straight rye is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged at least two years in new charred oak containers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which whiskeys were in the 2005 Buffalo Trace Antique Collection?

Buffalo Trace's 2005 Antique Collection carried the Sazerac 18 Year Old rye and Eagle Rare 17 Year Old, added William Larue Weller as an uncut, barrel-proof wheated bourbon, and released George T. Stagg three times that year: in the fall and in two spring lots, one of them sold only in Kentucky. Thomas H. Handy, the collection's second rye, first appeared in 2006.

Which Sazerac 18 releases were made from rye distilled in 2005?

Two much later ones. Buffalo Trace dates the barrels in the 2023 Sazerac 18 Year Old to autumn 2004 through spring 2005, and the 2024 release to distillations in March 2005 and March 2006. The 2005 Sazerac 18, released in fall 2005 with an 18-year age statement, was made from rye distilled in 1987 or earlier.
