What grapes are in Opus One 2022?
The 2022 is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 0.5% Malbec. Opus One assembles the blend anew each vintage from the five classic Bordeaux varieties, so these proportions belong to 2022 alone.
How long is Opus One 2022 aged, and in what oak?
Eighteen months in new French oak, following 20 days of skin contact. The wine was bottled at 14.0% ABV, restrained by the standards of Napa Valley Cabernet.
What was the 2022 growing season like at Opus One?
Early-winter rains brought twelve inches more than the previous year, then the late winter turned unseasonably dry. Late-spring weather was turbulent without affecting flowering or fruit set, and extreme temperatures arrived at harvest. The estate picked ripe fruit ahead of the heat and used selective irrigation, running harvest from 24 August to 26 September.
Why does Opus One make only one wine?
Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild founded the venture in 1978 to make a single wine measured against Bordeaux, and named it for a composer's first work. The first vintage was 1979 and the wine was released in 1984; the estate has kept to one blend a year since.
