Blanton's Straight From The Barrel is Blanton's Single Barrel bottled uncut and unfiltered at the proof its barrel reached, so the strength changes from bottle to bottle and is written on each label. Buffalo Trace makes it from the Mash Bill #2 recipe of the Original and the Gold Edition and announced its first American release in August 2020, to ship that fall; ours is the American bottle, 750 mL as its carton reads.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

Uncut and unfiltered — no water to set the proof, no filtration before bottling.

02

Proof set by the barrel, and entered in each label's proof box.

03

Original and Gold's recipe, Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #2.

04

Announced for American shelves in August 2020, shipping that fall, with a release planned every year.

05

A ruled, form-style label: dump date, barrel, warehouse, rick, proof and ABV.

06

750 mL in the United States, as the American carton reads.

Nº 02

From Barrel to Bottle, Uncut

U.S. release since 2020

Buffalo Trace announced Straight From The Barrel for the United States on 27 August 2020, the first time the bottling had been offered here and six months after the Gold Edition made the same crossing. The distillery described an uncut, unfiltered bourbon whose proof would vary from barrel to barrel, made to the same recipe as the Original and the Gold, with shipments starting that fall and one release every year after. It keeps the habit Colonel Blanton began with his barrels from Warehouse H — one barrel per bottling — and drops the two steps the Original still takes between cask and glass: bringing the whiskey down to a set proof, and filtering it.

Construction & Identification

What the bottle records
Strength

The Barrel Decides

There is no house proof. Each bottle is filled at the strength its barrel reached, and Buffalo Trace says that strength varies barrel to barrel; the figure that applies is the one entered on the label.

Label

A Form Filled In

Where the Original's label is script with blanks, this one is a ruled form: dumped on, from barrel number, in warehouse, on rick number, and two boxes for proof and alcohol by volume — handwritten on the bottle in our photographs.

Filtration

Neither Cut Nor Filtered

Buffalo Trace calls it uncut, unfiltered and bottled directly from the barrel. The Original's label, by contrast, says that bottle is filtered and bottled by hand at 93 proof.

Format

The American Carton

The United States bottling comes in a copper-brown carton marked 750ml, with a copper neck label reading Straight From The Barrel Bourbon.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Distiller notes & position
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Dark chocolate, caramel and butter over earthy walnut and hazelnut.
Palate: Warm vanilla, oak and toasted nuts, a rich spiciness and hints of butterscotch or honey.
Finish: Deep and resonant, by Buffalo Trace's account; at barrel proof each bottle carries its own weight.

II

Strategic Position

Of the three Blanton's bottlings Buffalo Trace sells in the United States, this is the only one without a fixed strength: Blanton's 93-proof starting point and the Gold Edition at a fixed 103 proof are both brought to a set proof, while Straight From The Barrel goes into the bottle as it left the cask. Blanton's suggests drinking it neat or with a splash of water.

Check the Two Boxes

Proof and alcohol by volume are written separately on the label, and the proof should be twice the ABV. Read both, with the barrel number and dump date, before buying a bottle at this strength.

→

One Release a Year

Buffalo Trace's 2020 plan set an annual American release, and each bottle's dump date records when its barrel was emptied. Barrel, rick and proof make every bottle a record of one cask.

Production Methodology

Straight From The Barrel is Blanton's Single Barrel without the last two steps: each barrel is bottled at the proof it reached, with no water added, and without filtration. Buffalo Trace makes it from the Mash Bill #2 recipe of the Original and the Gold Edition; because the strength belongs to the barrel, the label leaves boxes for proof and alcohol by volume, filled in with the barrel number, warehouse, rick and dump date.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. Frequently Asked Questions

What is Blanton's Straight From The Barrel?

Blanton's Straight From The Barrel, often shortened to SFTB, is the Blanton's single barrel bourbon that Buffalo Trace bottles uncut and unfiltered at barrel proof. It shares its recipe with Blanton's Original and Blanton's Gold Edition and was first offered in the United States in 2020.

What proof is Blanton's Straight From The Barrel?

Blanton's Straight From The Barrel has no single proof: each bottle is filled at the strength its barrel reached, and Buffalo Trace states that the proof varies from barrel to barrel. The proof and alcohol by volume are entered on each bottle's label, so the figure that applies is the one on the bottle in hand.

How does Blanton's SFTB differ from Blanton's Original?

Both come from the same recipe and are bottled one barrel at a time at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Blanton's Original is brought to a fixed 93 proof and its label says it is filtered; Blanton's Straight From The Barrel is bottled uncut and unfiltered at the proof of its barrel, which changes from bottle to bottle.
