Age Statement

Blanton's Takara Gold is the Japanese-market Gold Edition: a single-barrel Kentucky straight bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery, bottled at 103 proof, 51.5% ABV, in a 750 mL bottle and imported into Japan by Takara Shuzo. The word Takara does not appear on the label — the bottle reads Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon Gold Edition, exactly as the domestic release does. It carries no age statement.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

103 proof, 51.5% ABV — the same strength as the domestic Gold Edition.

02

The label never says Takara. The name is collector shorthand borrowed from Takara Shuzo, the Japanese importer.

03

Maroon wax over the stopper, where the domestic Gold uses a near-black dark brown.

04

A multi-page pamphlet neck tag; the domestic Gold has no neck tag at all.

05

750 mL, where a great many export Blanton's bottlings are 700 mL.

06

No age statement, despite what most listings claim. See the Collector Note.

Nº 02

Buffalo Trace & the Japanese Export Line

Export-only until 2020

Japan received the Blanton's expressions the United States could not buy for decades. Gold Edition and Straight From the Barrel were export-only until Sazerac began a domestic Gold release in 2020, and Takara Shuzo has distributed the brand in Japan for decades — the earliest records of a Japanese-market Gold single barrel run to 1992, roughly two years after the Takara Red bottling appeared and eight years after Elmer T. Lee created Blanton's. Producing a higher-proof version of an existing bourbon was not routine practice at the time, which is part of why the export bottlings developed a following of their own.

Construction & Identification

What the bottle records
Single Barrel Record

Every Bottle Is Its Own Document

Blanton's is bottled one barrel at a time, and each label is hand-marked with the dump date, the warehouse, the rick number and the barrel number. No two bottles are identical, which is why a fixed tasting note is a guide rather than a specification.

Mash Bill

Not Disclosed

Buffalo Trace does not publish mash bills for its brands. The higher-rye recipe commonly attributed to Blanton's comes from collectors and retailers rather than from the distillery.

Physical Tells

Wax, Tag and Back Label

Maroon wax rather than near-black; a large neck tag that opens as a multi-page pamphlet; Japanese characters on the neck wrapper; and a back label carrying spirit type, capacity, country of origin, importer and address in Japanese.

Format

750 mL, Not 700

Most export Blanton's bottlings run 700 mL. The Takara bottles are 750 mL, which makes format a genuine discriminator rather than boilerplate.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Distiller notes & position
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Spicy rye and tobacco first, with caramel and honey following, mingled with dark fruit and citrus.
Palate: Rye, tobacco and honey at the front, then round, bold charred oak and vanilla.
Finish: Extremely long and harmonious. Single barrel, so expect variance bottle to bottle.

II

Strategic Position

Japan received the Blanton's expressions the United States could not buy for decades, which is why the Japanese bottlings still carry a premium over their American counterparts at identical proof: what is being priced is provenance and packaging rather than a different whiskey. It sits with the export and allocated bottlings we hold, alongside the bonded Taylor from the same distillery.

The Eight-Year Claim Is Folklore

Almost every listing states this bottle is aged at least eight years, two more than the standard Gold. The bottle carries no age statement, Buffalo Trace has never published one, and reviewers who have handled Takara bottles alongside their domestic counterparts record the eight-year figure as a rumour. Buy it for the export provenance, which is documented, and not for an age that is not.

Identification Before Purchase

The front label cannot separate this from the domestic Gold Edition it is mistaken for. Check the wax colour, the presence of a pamphlet neck tag, and Japanese text on the back label before paying the export price.

Records & Assurance

Production Methodology

Blanton's is bottled one barrel at a time, so each bottle is a record of its own source: the label is hand-marked with the dump date, the warehouse, the rick number and the barrel number. That is also why no two bottles taste identical and why a fixed tasting note is a guide rather than a specification. The Japanese connection is old — Takara Shuzo has distributed Blanton's in Japan for decades, and the earliest records of a Japanese-market Gold single barrel run to 1992. Buffalo Trace does not disclose which of its mash bills goes into Blanton's; the higher-rye recipe commonly attributed to it comes from collectors, not from the distillery.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. Frequently Asked Questions

What proof is Blanton's Takara Gold?

Blanton's Takara Gold is bottled at 103 proof, or 51.5% ABV — the same strength as the Blanton's Gold Edition sold domestically in the United States. Proof is not what separates the two bottlings. Blanton's Original sits lower at 93 proof, and Straight From the Barrel is bottled at full barrel strength, which varies.

How do you tell Blanton's Takara Gold from the standard Gold Edition?

Not by the front label, which reads Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon Gold Edition on both. The reliable tells are physical: the Takara bottling wears maroon wax where the domestic Gold uses a near-black dark brown; it carries a large neck tag that opens out as a multi-page pamphlet, which the domestic Gold does not have at all; its neck wrapper carries Japanese characters where the domestic one is blank; and its back label carries Japanese text giving the spirit type, bottle capacity, country of origin, the importer Takara Shuzo, the importer's address and an alcohol warning. The name Takara is collector shorthand taken from the importer and appears nowhere on the bottle.

Does Blanton's Takara Gold have an age statement?

No. Blanton's Takara Gold carries no age statement, and Buffalo Trace has never published one. The widely repeated claim that it is aged eight years, two more than the standard Gold Edition, appears throughout retail listings but has no distillery source behind it; reviewers who have compared the Takara bottlings directly against their domestic counterparts record it as a rumour. The same unsourced two-extra-years story is attached to Takara Red and Takara Black as well.
