Tinoco described seeking a harmony of notes through the casks — smoky notes on one side as a reminder of the candles and incense of the festivity, and sweet notes on the other suggestive of the delicacies placed on ofrendas. The smoke is therefore a design decision traced to a specific cask source: Skye distilleries traditionally dry malted barley over burning peat, and that character transfers through the wood.

Why is the Clase Azul Día de Muertos Música 2024 smoky?

Because half of it was finished in Scotch whisky casks from the Isle of Skye. After 26 months that began in American whiskey casks, Master Distiller Viridiana Tinoco split the añejo into two batches, finished one in Skye casks and the other in Speyside casks, then recombined them. Skye distilleries traditionally dry their malted barley over burning peat, and that smoke carries into the wood and from the wood into the tequila. Tinoco has said the smoky notes were chosen deliberately as a reminder of the candles and incense of Día de Muertos, set against sweeter notes from the Speyside half suggestive of the offerings placed on ofrendas.
