Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Batch 12 is the 2023 release at 131.1 proof, 65.55% ABV, uncut and unfiltered. It rose 2.1 proof points from the year before — the largest upward move in the line's history — and is the highest figure the series has produced since 2013. The year after, it fell 3.8. Those two years are the most volatile consecutive pair since the 2014 reset.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

131.1 proof, 65.55% ABV. Unique in the line.

02

Up 2.1 proof on 2022 — the biggest single-year rise the series has recorded.

03

The highest release since 2013, a ten-year gap.

04

One of only two releases since 2014 to clear 130, the other being 2020 at 130.3.

05

Followed by a 3.8-point fall in 2024. A spike, not a new level.

06

Still 4.3 proof short of the line's 2013 record.

Nº 02

Barrel Proof, Explained

Barrel Proof Batch 12

Bottled-in-Bond is defined in federal regulation: one distillery, one distillation season, four years minimum under government supervision, exactly 100 proof. Every term in it is enforceable, which is the whole point, and it is the standard Colonel Taylor campaigned into law in 1897. Barrel proof has no equivalent. There is no federal standard of identity for the phrase, no defined tolerance and no requirement to state a figure at all — a producer may use it provided the labelling is not misleading, and that is the extent of the regulation. So the same brand carries one term with a statute behind it and one with nothing but the distillery's word, and this line depends entirely on the second. In practice Buffalo Trace prints a precise proof on every release, which is what makes identification by that number workable — but it is a choice, not an obligation.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Distiller notes & position
I

Sensory Profile

The modern ceiling: Since 2014 only two releases have gone above 130, and they sit 0.8 proof apart — this one and the 2020. The high end of the modern era is a two-bottle club rather than a tier.
Coming and going: Up 2.1 from 2022, down 3.8 into 2024. This release is the peak of a two-year excursion rather than a step to a higher baseline, which the following year settled decisively.
What is documented: 131.1 proof, a 2023 bottling, hand-selected barrels, no water added, no chill filtration.

II

Strategic Position

The easy reading of 131.1 is that the line was climbing. It was not. The 2024 release came in at 127.3, four points lower, and 2025 landed lower still — so 2023 is a spike, and its interest lies in how sharp the spike was rather than in where it pointed. Two consecutive years moving 2.1 up and 3.8 down is the most volatile stretch the series has produced since the 2014 crash, and it sits inside what is otherwise a well-behaved range. Worth keeping the ceiling in view: at 131.1 this is still 4.3 proof short of the 2013 record, which thirteen years of releases have not approached. It sits among the surrounding barrel-proof years, one year after the 2022 return to 129.

Collector Note & Index

Collector Note

A spike is a better thing to own than a trend, because it cannot be repeated by simply waiting. If the line had been climbing toward 131, later releases would have matched it; instead 2024 fell four points and 2025 fell further, which leaves 2023 as the only recent release at the top of the range. That is a cleaner scarcity argument than most bottles in this series can make, and it does not depend on outturn figures Buffalo Trace has never published. Identification is easy — 131.1 belongs to this release alone, so the face settles it and L23 confirms the year. Be wary only of listings that present it as the start of a higher era; the two years since say otherwise.

How to Taste It

Use the headroom. At 131.1 there is enough strength here to work a single pour down through several distinct levels, which very few bottles in this line allow — and doing it deliberately is more informative than doing it by feel. Pour a generous measure, taste it neat, then add water in measured amounts rather than drops from a bottle: a fixed quantity each time, tasting between additions. By the third or fourth step you will have moved the glass through the equivalent of several different releases in this series, which is the closest thing to a vertical you can run from one bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What proof is E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof Batch 12?

131.1 proof, or 65.55% ABV, bottled uncut and unfiltered. It is unique in the line and the highest figure the series has produced since 2013, though still 4.3 proof short of that year's 135.4 record.

Was 2023 the start of higher-proof E.H. Taylor releases?

No. The 2023 release rose 2.1 proof points from 2022, the largest single-year rise in the line's history, and then the 2024 release fell 3.8 proof points to 127.3 with 2025 lower still. It is a spike rather than a new baseline, and it remains one of only two releases since 2014 to clear 130 proof — the other being the 2020 at 130.3.

Is barrel proof a regulated term?

Not in the way Bottled-in-Bond is. The Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 is codified in federal regulation and specifies one distillery, one distillation season, a minimum of four years in a federally supervised warehouse and exactly 100 proof. Barrel proof has no federal standard of identity, no defined tolerance and no requirement to state a figure. Buffalo Trace prints a precise proof on every release in this line by choice rather than obligation.
