The Macallan Sherry Oak 18 Years Old 2025 Release is matured a minimum of eighteen years in predominantly sherry-seasoned European oak casks from Jerez, bottled at 43% ABV with no colouring added. It is also the first Sherry Oak 18 to arrive in the redesigned bottle rolled out across the range during 2025 — which carries an anti-counterfeit device and a QR code linking to that bottle's own bottling information.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

43% ABV. A minimum of eighteen years, not exactly eighteen.

02

Predominantly sherry-seasoned European oak from Jerez, with a small proportion of American oak.

03

Annual release, not a vintage. The 2025 on the box is the bottling year.

04

Light mahogany colour, natural — Macallan adds none.

05

First Sherry Oak 18 in the David Carson redesign, with an anti-counterfeit device and a bottling-information QR code.

06

One of four in the Sherry Oak Collection, alongside the 12, 25 and 30 year.

Nº 02

The Sherry Oak Collection

12, 18, 25 and 30 years

The Sherry Oak line is Macallan's European-oak-led range, issued at four ages, and it is the part of the distillery's output most closely tied to the sherry-seasoned cask programme the house is built on. It sits apart from the Double Cask range, which pairs American and European oak, and the difference between the two at the same age is the clearest demonstration Macallan offers of what European oak contributes. The Sherry Oak 18 is released annually, so each year's bottling is a new release rather than a vintage, and the 2025 edition is the first to arrive in the redesigned bottle the distillery rolled out across the range that year.

Casks & the 2025 Bottle

What the wood and the glass carry
European Oak

Commissioned, Not Bought

Macallan selects its own oak rather than buying second-hand casks. European oak is denser than American and interacts more aggressively with the spirit, which is why this line reads darker and more tannic.

Sherry Seasoning

Seasoned in Jerez

Each cask is coopered to the distillery's specification in Jerez and filled with sherry purely to season the wood — a process running to roughly six years before any spirit goes in.

American Oak

A Small Proportion

A minority of American oak sits alongside the European. The Sherry Oak line stays European-led; the balance tips the other way on the Double Cask range.

The 2025 Bottle

Anti-Counterfeit & QR

The David Carson redesign added a high-security anti-counterfeit device and a QR code returning bottling information for that specific bottle — the first Sherry Oak 18 with a verification route built in.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Distiller notes & position
I

Sensory Profile

Colour: Light mahogany, naturally derived from the casks.
Nose and palate: Ginger, dates and dark chocolate, over a full-bodied base of mature oak and raisin.
Character: European-oak-led throughout, which is what separates the Sherry Oak line from the Double Cask range built on American and European oak together.

II

Strategic Position

The 2025 release matters beyond what is in the bottle. Macallan rolled out a complete redesign across Double Cask 12, 15 and 18 and Sherry Oak 12 and 18 during the year — a reshaped bottle drawn from the distillery roofline, a triangular shoulder label for the Sherry Triangle, and, more usefully, a high-security anti-counterfeit device and a QR code that returns that specific bottle's bottling information. For a whisky this heavily counterfeited, an authentication route printed on the packaging is a more significant change than the silhouette. It sits among the Macallan core range we hold, below the 25 year sherry oak above it.

Two Things Routinely Misread

Two things about this bottle are routinely misread. The first is the year. Macallan moved from vintage-dated Sherry Oak 18 bottles to an annual release format in the early 2000s, so 2025 is the bottling year, not a distillation year — and the age is stated as a minimum of eighteen years, meaning some of what is in the bottle is older. A listing describing this as an eighteen-year-old distilled in 2007 is inventing both halves of that claim. The second is scarcity: Macallan publishes no outturn for the annual release, so nobody can tell you how many bottles exist. What genuinely distinguishes the 2025 is the packaging change, and that cuts in the buyer's favour — the QR code returns bottling information for that specific bottle, which is the first time this expression has shipped with a verification route built into it. The tea collaboration from the same year came out of the same distillery months earlier.

How to Taste It

Neat, in a glass that lets the nose collect, and give it ten minutes. Eighteen years in European oak produces a whisky that is already open — there is nothing locked away that water is needed to release, and at 43% dilution costs more than it returns. If you want to understand what the Sherry Oak line actually is, pour it against a Double Cask 18 of the same age: the Double Cask is built on American and European oak together, this one is European-led, and the gap between them is the clearest demonstration of what European oak contributes that the distillery sells. It also stands up beside dessert — sticky toffee, Christmas cake, anything fig or date driven.

Production Methodology

Every cask behind this whisky was commissioned rather than bought. Macallan selects the oak, has it coopered to its own specification in Jerez, fills it with sherry purely to season the wood, then empties it and ships it to Speyside — a process running to roughly six years before any spirit goes in. European oak is denser than American, rarer, and interacts more aggressively with the spirit, which is why the Sherry Oak line reads darker and more tannic than the Double Cask range built on both woods. Eighteen years then adds eighteen years of warehouse space, insurance and evaporation to the cost of each bottle. None of that is unusual for aged Scotch; what is unusual is doing it at this volume, on casks nobody else has used first.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ABV is Macallan Sherry Oak 18 Years Old 2025?

43% ABV. That is consistent across the Sherry Oak 18 annual releases. The whisky is matured for a minimum of eighteen years in predominantly sherry-seasoned European oak casks from Jerez, with a small proportion of American oak, and bottled with no colouring added.

Is the 2025 release a vintage year?

No. Macallan moved the Sherry Oak 18 from vintage-dated bottles to an annual release format in the early 2000s, so 2025 refers to when the whisky was bottled rather than when it was distilled. The age statement is a minimum of eighteen years, which means the contents may include older whisky. Listings that give a distillation year for this bottle are supplying a figure Macallan does not publish.

What changed in the 2025 Macallan packaging?

The whole presentation. Designer David Carson reshaped the bottle around the distillery's roofline, kept the triangular shoulder label representing the Sherry Triangle of Spain, and redesigned the cask symbol on the back. More practically for buyers, the new packaging carries a high-security anti-counterfeit device and a QR code that links to bottling information for that specific bottle. The redesign rolled out across Double Cask 12, 15 and 18 and Sherry Oak 12 and 18 through 2025.
