Seventeen years is the age printed on the fall 2006 Eagle Rare 17 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, but by Buffalo Trace's fact sheet the whiskey inside had reached 18 by bottling. Forty-seven barrels of spring 1988 distillate from Warehouse Q made up the batch, bottled at 90.0 proof (45% ABV) for the 2006 Antique Collection, the first to include Thomas H. Handy Sazerac.

Thomas H. Handy joins

Buffalo Trace wrote to the retailers of this bourbon on August 9, 2006. That fall Thomas H. Handy Sazerac joined the Antique Collection, making it five whiskeys, and no new whiskey followed it into the collection until 2025, when E.H. Taylor Bottled-in-Bond arrived.

Sensory Profile

Buffalo Trace's tasting comment for the 2006 release is brief: a touch of caramel and a hint of leather. Its 2005 sheet reads the same but for “old” before leather.

Strategic Position

Spring 1988 whiskey from Warehouse Q also made the 2005 release, bottled at 17 years. Two releases on came the 62-barrel bottling of fall 2008. In its own year it shared the collection with Thomas H. Handy's debut rye.

Production Methodology

The 2006 fact sheet sets out the process behind the batch. A sour mash of Kentucky corn, Minnesota rye and North Dakota malted barley was cooked at 240°F, fermented in carbon steel and black iron, and double distilled to 135 proof through a beer still and doubler. Barreled at 125 proof in new white oak from Independent Stave, charred to #4, the spring 1988 distillate stayed in Warehouse Q for 18 years, until 47 barrels were selected by hand for bottling at 90.0 proof after chill filtration.
