Seven months past the statement. The label carries Eagle Rare's 17-year age statement; the distillery's own record gives 17 years and 7 months at bottling, counted from a spring-1993 fill.

Five warehouses, five floors. Barrels came from Warehouses C, H, I, Q and K and from the first, second, third, fourth and sixth floors. The 2011, 2012 and 2013 fact sheets name Warehouses I and K alone.

74 hand-picked barrels. The largest selection on the four spring-1993 fact sheets; the three that followed list 24, 23 and 25 barrels.

49.3% to evaporation. Just under half of the original whiskey was gone by bottling, the smallest loss recorded on those four sheets.

“Dry, leather, vanilla and tobacco” is how Buffalo Trace summed up the fall 2010 bottling. Three of those four words — dry, leather and tobacco — recur in the distillery's comments for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 releases from the same distillation season; of those three, only the 2011 comment keeps vanilla.

Strategic Position

Released in the same collection as Thomas H. Handy's rye in the 2010 set, the 2010 is the youngest bottling and the widest selection on the four spring-1993 fact sheets. The nearest earlier year we list is the 2008 release, two years before this one; the same distillation season reappears in the 2011 bottling, a year older at 18 years 7 months.

Production Methodology

Grain, water, still and barrel all appear on the 2010 sheet. Kentucky corn (distillers grade #1 and #2), Minnesota rye and North Dakota malted barley were milled through a #10 screen and cooked at 240°F in Kentucky limestone water treated by reverse osmosis, then fermented as a sour mash in carbon steel / black iron fermenters. Double distillation through a beer still and doubler brought the spirit off at 135 proof. It entered new white oak barrels from Independent Stave of Lebanon, Kentucky — #4 char, 55 seconds of flame, 53 liquid gallons — at 125 proof in the spring of 1993, aged across Warehouses C, H, I, Q and K, and was chill filtered and bottled at 90 proof at 17 years and 7 months.
