Barrel Proof Batch 10

One distinction gets blurred constantly, and 2021 is when it mattered most. E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof is not part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. It is a separate annual release from the same distillery, which is why the cancellation of a BTAC bottling pushed buyers onto a product from a different programme — they were substituting across two lines that share a distillery and little else. The relationship has since changed: in 2025 Buffalo Trace added E.H. Taylor, Jr. Bottled in Bond to the Antique Collection, the first new member since 2006, so the brand now has one expression inside the collection and this one outside it. They are not the same whiskey, not the same strength and not the same release. The Taylor that later joined the Antique Collection is bonded at exactly 100 proof.

Coming off 2020: 63.65% against the previous year's 65.15% — a three-point drop, and the line's sharpest fall in seven years. The 2021 release is a return to the bottom of the range immediately after one of its four excursions above 130.
Why the record is unusual here: Buffalo Trace published no note, as ever, but 2021 generated an unusual amount of commentary about this bottle — almost all of it about the Stagg cancellation rather than about the whiskey.

Strategic Position

George T. Stagg is Buffalo Trace's flagship uncut bourbon and a fixture of the Antique Collection. In 2021 the distillery did not release it. Anyone who wanted a barrel-strength Buffalo Trace bourbon that autumn had a materially shorter list than usual, and E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof was on it — which is why a 127.3-proof release sitting at the bottom of its own range became one of the more sought bottles of the year. That is a genuinely odd provenance: its scarcity was manufactured by the absence of a different whiskey. It sits within the barrel-proof line we keep, and its proof twin is the 2024 release at the same 127.3.

This is the worst identification problem in the line and the one most likely to cost you money. Three separate releases carry 127.3 — this one in 2021, Batch 13 in 2024 and Batch 14b in 2025 — and Colonel E.H. Taylor labels print no batch numeral, so the figure on the face narrows a bottle to one of three and no further. L21 is this release. L24 and L25 are the others. Check the glass, not the listing, and be especially careful with sellers using batch numbers: the 2025 releases in particular are numbered inconsistently across the trade, so a description reading Batch 15 or Batch 16 tells you nothing verifiable. The premium attaching to 2021 is real but it rests on the Stagg cancellation, which the later 127.3 bottlings have no claim to.

How to Taste It

Three releases at one proof is the best controlled experiment this line offers, and it is worth running. Pour the 2021, 2024 and 2025 side by side and the strength variable is removed entirely — identical proof, identical process, identical distillery, three different barrel selections four years apart. Whatever separates the glasses is the barrels and nothing else, which is the question a barrel-proof vertical is usually too noisy to answer. Neat, equal measures, and do it blind if you have someone to pour. If you only have this one, taste it without the 2021 story in your head; it was bought that year for reasons that had little to do with the liquid.
