Buffalo Trace’s September 2014 announcement tied the year’s slightly larger Stagg supply to distillation it had increased in 1997, though the bourbon was still allocated. The fact sheets count 118 barrels for the 2012, 157 for the 2013 and 161 for this release.

Buffalo Trace’s tasting comment for 2014 lists “Dark chocolate, vanilla, coffee and dates”; the 2015 comment a year later kept the chocolate, vanilla and dates, put “Expresso” in place of coffee and added molasses.

Strategic Position

Its neighbors are the spring 1997 Stagg released in 2013 and the 2015 bottling from spring 2000 distillate, a tenth of a proof point stronger. In the same fall Buffalo Trace released the 140.2-proof wheated Weller of 2014.

Production Methodology

Working back from the bottle: no filtration and no added water; before that, new Independent Stave barrels with a #4 char fired for 55 seconds, filled at 125 proof; before that, a beer still and a doubler that brought the spirit off at 135 proof. The sour mash behind it was cooked at 240°F and fermented in carbon steel and black iron, from Kentucky corn of distillers grades #1 and #2, Minnesota rye and North Dakota malted barley milled through a #10 screen, with Kentucky limestone water run through reverse osmosis.
