Stagg Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey; at bottling the spring 2002 whiskey from Warehouses C, K, M and Q was 15 years and 3 months old and 129.2 proof, or 64.6% ABV, neither cut nor filtered.

Over twice 2016. 309 barrels against the 2016’s 142; the 2018 followed with 284.

14.9 lower. 129.2 proof, where the 2016 had reached 144.1.

Spring 2002. The season the barrels were filled, by the 2017 announcement; the 2016 was spring 2001 whiskey and the 2018 spring 2003.

54.03% lost. Far less than the 2016’s 75.99%, a little more than the 2018’s 51.15%.

Out in October. Buffalo Trace scheduled the 2017 collection for stores from October, its announcement said.

Sensory Profile

“Expresso, Chocolate Fudge and Tobacco” is the 2017 tasting note in Buffalo Trace’s release; fudge and tobacco both echo the 2013 sheet’s “Fudge, vanilla, and tobacco”.

Strategic Position

On one side is Stagg’s 2016 release from spring 2001 whiskey, 14.9 proof points stronger; on the other, the 284-barrel Stagg of 2018, 4.3 points weaker at 124.9. In the 2017 collection itself, the wheated bourbon was Weller’s winter 2005 whiskey at 128.2 proof.

Nothing in the 2017 fact sheet’s process lines departs from the 2013 to 2016 sheets: a sour mash of Kentucky corn, Minnesota rye and North Dakota malted barley, cooked at 240°F and fermented in carbon steel and black iron; a beer still and a doubler, 135 proof off the still; new 53-gallon Independent Stave barrels with a #4 char, entered at 125 proof; no filtration. Buffalo Trace’s page for the brand adds that George T. Stagg is bottled without water added.
