The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Intense Arabica is the domestic half of Harmony II, bottled at 44% ABV and matured in sherry-seasoned European and American oak. Whisky Maker Steven Bremner built it around the Ethiopian Arabica bean after hosting a masterclass with coffee masters on the process from field to cup. Its box and label are made from repurposed coffee bean husks.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

44% ABV — the bolder of the two Arabica releases, against 40% for the travel-retail edition.

02

The packaging is made of coffee. Box and label from repurposed coffee bean husks, developed with paper expert Michele Posocco.

03

Matured in sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks.

04

Built by Whisky Maker Steven Bremner, who ran a masterclass with coffee masters before making it.

05

Inspired by the Ethiopian Arabica bean — the first species of coffee to be cultivated.

06

Released worldwide from October 2022; the US allocation arrived that November at $185.

Cask & Craft

Intense Arabica

The Harmony Collection's premise is packaging, not flavour — each release takes an organic by-product at the end of its useful life and turns it into the box. For Harmony II that material is coffee bean husk, the cascara left after the bean is extracted, which Macallan developed into a hybrid paper with the Italian paper expert Michele Posocco. So the coffee appears twice in this release and in two entirely different forms: as the inspiration for a liquid that legally cannot contain any of it, and as the physical substance of the container holding it. That is the collection's idea working at full stretch, and it is the clearest example across all six releases. The whisky itself was matured in sherry-seasoned European and American oak and built by Steven Bremner, who ran a masterclass with coffee masters on the journey from field to cup before making it.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Distiller notes & position
I

Sensory Profile

Colour: Macallan named it Crema — a warm, rich amber.
Nose: Tiramisu and cappuccino with gingerbread, raisins and almonds, over sweet oak and vanilla.
Palate: Dark chocolate and espresso with raisins, blackberry, Brazil nut and sweet oak, closing on a long dark-roast coffee note.

II

Strategic Position

The names are not marketing. Intense Arabica and Smooth Arabica describe an actual difference in strength — 44% here against 40% for the travel-retail edition — and Macallan built the pair as two readings of one brief rather than a flagship and a lesser version. That makes Harmony II the clearest of the collection's pairings: same whisky maker, same cask types, same inspiration, and a four-point gap that does most of the work separating them. It sits among the coffee-themed Macallan releases we carry, beside the 40% travel-retail counterpart.

Collector Note

Watch the release dates and watch the listings. This went out worldwide in October 2022 but the United States allocation did not land until November, so US bottles carry a different arrival than the global launch date most descriptions quote — worth knowing when a seller dates a bottle by the release rather than by its market. More importantly, retailer pages for this collection are unusually error-prone: one US merchant currently lists a bottle titled as the 2024 Amber Meadow while the entire description beneath it is the Intense Arabica copy, Ethiopian beans and all. The releases share a house style, a box format and a naming convention, which makes them easy to confuse and easy to mislabel. Buy on the full expression name and the ABV together. The chocolate release that preceded it started the sequence.

How to Taste It

Macallan built this one to be drunk with coffee and published a pairing ritual for it, which is unusual enough to be worth taking seriously rather than treating as marketing. The logic holds: a whisky carrying espresso and dark chocolate alongside an actual cup gives you the comparison the brief was written against, and at 44% there is enough body to stand next to something bitter and hot without disappearing. If you would rather taste it alone, take it neat and give the nose time — the tiramisu and cappuccino notes arrive before the oak does. Skip water. Four points of strength is the only thing separating this from its travel-retail twin, and diluting closes that gap for no gain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ABV is Macallan Harmony Intense Arabica?

44% ABV. It is the bolder of the two Harmony II releases — the travel-retail Smooth Arabica was bottled at 40%. Both were crafted by Whisky Maker Steven Bremner from sherry-seasoned European and American oak, with the four-point strength difference the main distinction between them.

What is the Intense Arabica packaging made from?

Repurposed coffee bean husks. The presentation box and the bottle label were made from cascara, the husk left over from coffee processing, developed into a hybrid paper with the paper expert Michele Posocco. That is the Harmony Collection's core premise — each release turns an organic by-product into its own packaging.

Does Macallan Intense Arabica contain coffee?

No. Scotch Whisky Association rules permit only water, malted barley and yeast in a single malt, so no coffee or flavouring of any kind can be added. The coffee character comes from cask selection — sherry-seasoned European and American oak — and from a brief that Whisky Maker Steven Bremner developed after studying coffee production with coffee masters.
