For the second US Edition, Chichibu built the vatting around grain: seven casks of whisky made from Braemar, floor-malted Tipple and peated Concerto barley. Ichiro's Malt bottled it in 2019 at 55.5% ABV, or 111 proof, and released 1,556 bottles for the United States.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

Barley on the label. The box label lists all seven casks by the barley they were made from — Tipple, Braemar and Concerto — where the 2018 label had listed its casks by wood.

02

Floor-malted Tipple. Two casks hold whisky distilled from Tipple barley that was floor malted: steeped, then spread across a malting floor to germinate.

03

Peat from Concerto. The label marks the two Concerto casks as peated, the only peated component in the vatting; Braemar fills the other three casks.

04

Bottled in 2019 at 55.5%. The strength — 55.5% ABV, 111 proof — sits just under the 56.4% of the 2018 edition, and the 2020 bottling kept it unchanged.

05

1,556 bottles. Seven casks yielded 1,556 bottles, about a quarter more than the 1,235 of the first edition.

Barley at Chichibu

Floor maltings · Local farms

Chichibu built a floor maltings on its own site, and barley grown by farmers around the town supplies part of the malt it uses. From there the process runs through washbacks of Mizunara oak and two small copper stills from Forsyths before the spirit goes into cask. The 2019 US Edition carries that interest in raw material onto the label, naming the barley behind every cask.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Published note & position
I

Sensory Profile

High Road Spirits' note for this edition describes a textured, house-style Chichibu with a faint toasted-biscuit aroma. On the palate it starts dry and sharp before moving into very ripe grape and clean bourbon-cask notes, and it closes cleanly, sweet only at the edges.

II

Strategic Position

The 2019 bottle sits between two very different neighbors: the 56.4% opening edition of 2018, defined by its casks, and the 2020 follow-up peated to 30 ppm, which made peat the subject of a whole release. Barley varieties first appeared on the US Edition label with this bottle, and its two peated Concerto casks point toward the year that followed.

A barley map on the box

The label sets out the seven casks in a margin column — Tipple marked floor malted, Braemar, Concerto marked peated — beside the distillery's history, with the edition name and 秩父 in silver foil.

Floor malting in the vatting

The two Tipple casks hold the floor-malted part of the vatting, a malting method Chichibu also uses on its own site.

Records & Assurance

Production Methodology

Each of the seven casks began with one barley variety: Tipple that had been floor malted, Braemar, or Concerto malted with peat. The 2019 US Edition brings the three strands together at 55.5% ABV and records on the box which barley filled which cask.
