Ichiro's Malt Chichibu The US Edition 2021 is the fourth of Chichibu Distillery's annual US bottlings and the first in a 700 mL bottle. It was matured in new barrels, new hogsheads and first-fill bourbon barrels and bottled at 53.5% ABV, or 107 proof, without chill filtration — 2,150 bottles for the United States.

The Elemental Distinction

New oak, two sizes. The label lists new barrels and new hogsheads — casks on their first fill of any kind — beside the bourbon barrels.

First-fill bourbon. The bourbon barrels are marked first fill: their first use for whisky after they were emptied of bourbon.

The first 700 mL edition. The 2021 bottle is the first US Edition at 700 mL; the 2018, 2019 and 2020 editions were 750 mL.

53.5% ABV, non-chill-filtered. Bottled at 53.5% ABV, which is 107 proof, and non-chill-filtered per High Road Spirits.

2,150 bottles. The US release came to 2,150 bottles, the most of the first four US Editions.

Wood at Chichibu

Cooperage · Dunnage warehouses

Chichibu opened a cooperage on its own grounds in 2013 and matures its whisky in dunnage warehouses on site. The US Editions have drawn on a different set of casks each year — bourbon barrels and a Mizunara-headed hogshead in 2018, ex-chibidaru and an ex-wine cask among the 2020 barrels — and for 2021 most of the casks were new oak, barrels and hogsheads that had held nothing before.

Sensory Profile

New barrels and new hogsheads, casks that had held nothing before, make up most of this vatting, with first-fill bourbon barrels beside them. The whisky went into bottle at 53.5% ABV without chill filtration, the lowest strength of the first four US Editions.

Strategic Position

The 2021 bottling follows the peated 111-proof edition of 2020 and changes both the wood and the bottle: new oak and first-fill bourbon casks in place of that edition's bourbon and ex-bourbon barrels, ex-chibidaru and ex-wine cask, and 700 mL in place of 750 mL. The 2022 follow-up from beer and cider wood kept both the 53.5% strength and the 700 mL bottle.

Copper on cream

The label switches to copper foil for the edition name and 秩父 on a cream ground, and lists its casks as new barrel, first-fill bourbon barrel and new hogshead.

Federal rules added 700 mL as a standard size for spirits in late December 2020. The 2021 edition is the first US Edition sold in that size.
