For 2025 Chichibu put beer casks back at the center of its US Edition: ex-IPA and ex-imperial stout casks beside ex-bourbon barrels, sixteen in all, holding lightly peated whisky five to nine years old. Ichiro's Malt Chichibu The US Edition 2025 was bottled at 52.5% ABV, 105 proof, and its label shows Mark Twain raising a dram, a Mississippi steamboat behind him.

The Elemental Distinction

Beer-cask maturation. High Road Spirits describes the edition as focused on beer-cask maturation, meant to bring the tropical, hoppy character of IPA and imperial stout to Chichibu's fruit-forward spirit.

Three kinds of barrel. Ex-bourbon barrels, ex-IPA casks and ex-imperial stout casks make up the sixteen in the vatting.

Lightly peated. The malt was lightly peated — between the heavily peated 2023 edition and the unpeated 2024.

Five to nine years. The whisky in the sixteen barrels was five to nine years old, bottled without an age statement.

Third in a run of scenes. Mark Twain follows Commodore Perry in 2023 and Steamboat Willie in 2024 as the figure in the imagined scene on the US Edition label.

Mark Twain and the River

The 2025 label

Samuel Langhorne Clemens took the name Mark Twain from the steamboat term for two fathoms — twelve feet of water, the depth a riverboat needed to run safely — and the steamboat behind him on the 2025 label puts him back on that river. High Road Spirits introduces Twain as the father of modern American literature, the author of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and, late in life, an outspoken anti-imperialist; the label continues the imagined scenes the 2023 and 2024 editions began.

High Road Spirits' and Skurnik's note for 2025 lists candied orange peel, dried pineapple and vanilla pastry cream against a line of hop bitterness, and compares the whisky's lift to an ale matured in wood. Skurnik credits the IPA and imperial stout casks with tropical fruit and deep coffee notes over the distillery's fruity house character.

The 2025 bottling keeps the 52.5% of the unpeated 2024 vatting with two floor-malted barrels, adds a light peat, and brings back the IPA and imperial stout casks that sat at the heart of the 2022 edition.

Production Methodology

Lightly peated malted barley was fermented for 100 hours in Mizunara oak washbacks and double distilled in Forsyths copper pot stills. The spirit then spent five to nine years in sixteen barrels — ex-bourbon, ex-IPA and ex-imperial stout — before Chichibu vatted them and bottled the 2025 US Edition at 52.5% ABV, non-chill-filtered, with no added coloring.
