Up 13.5. From 116.9 in 2019 to 130.4 here; the 2020 barrels were filled in spring 2005, a year after the 2019’s.

The ninth floor. Warehouses L, K and Q supplied barrels from the first, second and ninth floors, the fact sheet shows.

Higher loss. 59.0% of the original whiskey evaporated, which the September announcement called a bit higher than in the last few years’ releases.

140 off the still. The spring 2005 distillate came off the doubler at 140 proof; the 2018 sheet had listed 135.

Fewer warehouses. Three held these barrels, against five for the 2019 release and six for the 2018.

The gap after this release

This was the last George T. Stagg before a year without one. On October 6, 2021, Buffalo Trace announced its Antique Collection without Stagg, saying the barrels set aside for the brand in 2006 did not meet its taste standards for the whiskey; Stagg came back in 2022 with spring 2007 whiskey at 138.7 proof, 15 years and 5 months old, from Warehouse K.

Sensory Profile

Caramel and cherries carry over from the 2019 nose into these notes. Buffalo Trace’s 2020 sheet lists “Cinnamon, caramel, and cherries” on the nose, “Creamy vanilla with lightly smoked oak” for the palate and, to close, a “Long finish of black coffee, dark cherries, & herbs.”

Strategic Position

Before it in the series came the 2019 Stagg with many first-floor barrels; after it came the gap year, the 138.7-proof 2022 release and then the 135-proof bottling of 2023. In the 2020 set, Weller’s winter 2008 wheated bourbon at 134.5 proof outpaced it by 4.1 points; the two were the collection’s uncut bourbons.
