Set between two stronger releases, the 138.7-proof 2022 and the 136.1-proof 2024, the fall 2023 George T. Stagg Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is spring 2008 bourbon that Buffalo Trace drew from Warehouses C, I, K, L and M and bottled uncut and unfiltered at 135 proof (67.5% ABV).

Five warehouses, five floors. Warehouses C, I, K, L and M supplied the barrels, across floors 1 to 5.

Two-thirds and more. Of the whiskey first barreled, 68.0% was gone by bottling; the 2024 release lost 61%.

A year after 2007. Its barrels date from the spring of 2008, a year after the spring 2007 whiskey that made the 2022 release.

Second after the gap. Stagg sat out the 2021 Antique Collection; counting from its 2022 return, this is the second release.

All five Antique Collection staples were announced on October 9, 2023, and Buffalo Trace singled out one milestone among them, the 19-year, 3-month Eagle Rare 17 of 2023. The whiskeys were due at retail in early October.

Sensory Profile

The 2023 sheet’s notes run from “A wave of cinnamon and cherry cola” on the nose to a palate “Well-balanced with a mix of leather, chocolate and vanilla frosting” and “A robust, earthy finish.” The October announcement described the same flavors in prose.

Strategic Position

Three years earlier, the 2020 Stagg with barrels from the ninth floor had come in at 130.4, and the 2024 Stagg distilled across two seasons came in 1.1 points stronger the following fall. Weller’s 133.6-proof wheated bourbon came out beside it, 1.4 points lower.

The 2023 release’s sour mash fermented in black iron and carbon steel, and its distillate left the doubler at 140 proof, while the 2024 sheet would list stainless steel fermenters.

The 2023 sheet pairs Minnesota rye and North Dakota malted barley with Kentucky corn, the same three origins listed for 2018, 2020 and 2025; the 2024 sheet lists plump rye instead.
