Buffalo Trace's batch record for this release is the most complete in the Eagle Rare 17 vertical. The mash is the distillery's rye mash bill #1 — Kentucky corn as the large grain, Minnesota rye as the small grain, North Dakota distillers malted barley to finish — cooked at 240 degrees Fahrenheit on Kentucky limestone water treated by reverse osmosis and fermented on a sour mash in carbon steel. It was double distilled through a beer still and doubler, coming off at 140 proof, then filled at 125 proof into new 53-gallon white oak barrels from Independent Stave of Lebanon, Kentucky, with a number four char burned for 55 seconds. Those barrels rested in Warehouses C, I, K, M and Q on the first and second floors until they were drawn at nineteen years and three months, by which point 78.0% of the original whiskey had gone to evaporation. The distillery chill filtered it before bottling at 101 proof.

Buffalo Trace describes it as the oldest Eagle Rare 17 released since the expression joined the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. The two releases that followed it were both younger: 17 years 4 months in 2024, and a 2025 bottling the distillery describes as maturing 18 years and 4 months.

Why does the 2023 Eagle Rare 17 label say 17 years?

Buffalo Trace states that 17 years is the minimum age for the barrels that go into Eagle Rare 17-Year-Old, not the age of the whiskey in any given bottle, and that the actual age varies from one annual release to the next so the flavour profile stays where the distillery wants it. On this release the label reads 17 years and the whiskey was 19 years and 3 months old, a gap of two years and three months.

No. Eagle Rare 17-Year-Old is bottled at a fixed 101 proof, 50.5% ABV, and has been at that strength since the 2018 collection. In the 2023 Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, George T. Stagg, William Larue Weller and Thomas H. Handy Sazerac were the uncut, unfiltered bottlings, while this release and Sazerac Rye 18-Year-Old were both bottled to a set strength and chill filtered.
