Pappy’s Recipe

1893 · 1935

Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr. started out in 1893, at eighteen, as a salesman for the liquor wholesaler W.L. Weller & Sons. He was sixty-one when Stitzel-Weller opened its doors on Derby Day, May 1935, in Shively, just outside Louisville, and its bourbon swapped rye for wheat; by Buffalo Trace’s account, at ninety-one he was the oldest active distiller in the country. The bourbons sold under his name today, the 15 Year among them, keep that wheated recipe.
