The Elemental Distinction

Five wheated, one rye. Five of the six are wheated Kentucky straight bourbons; the sixth, the 13-year Family Reserve Rye, is a Kentucky straight rye.

Three strengths. The set covers the collection’s three strengths in 2026: 107 proof for the ten-year and the 15, 95.6 for the rye and the 23, and 90.4 for the twelve-year and the 20.

Three names. The ten-year is released as Old Rip Van Winkle, the twelve-year and the rye under the Van Winkle name, and the three oldest bourbons as Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve.

Ten to twenty-three years. Age statements run 10, 12, 13, 15, 20 and 23 years.

Four Generations

1893 · 1935 · 1972 · 2001

The collection is the work of four generations of one family. Pappy sold whiskey for W.L. Weller & Sons from 1893 and opened Stitzel-Weller in 1935; under Julian Jr., his son, the distillery left the family in 1972; Julian III, the grandson, built out the older ages and the rye; and Preston, of the fourth generation, has been in the business since 2001 and is now vice-president of Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery. All six whiskeys are crafted today at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, where the family has worked in partnership since 2002.

Sensory Profile

Read together, the family’s 2026 notes move from ripe cherry and pecan in the ten-year, through dried mango and spiced peach in the twelve and chestnut and white pepper in the rye, to caramel corn and leather in the 15, citrus zest and sherry in the 20, and ripe apple, tobacco and chocolate in the 23. Oak appears in five of the six notes, seasoned in the ten-, twelve- and 15-year, dry in the rye and mature in the 23, while the 20’s note rests on fruit, sherry and vanilla.

Strategic Position

The set holds the whole 2026 ladder: the ten-year Old Rip, youngest of the six, at one end, and Pappy’s 23-year, the oldest bottle in the collection, at the other. Between them stand the twelve-year Special Reserve; the 2026 collection’s one rye, aged 13 years; the 15 Year; and the twenty-year bottle that started the Pappy labels.

Each whiskey in the set keeps its own age statement and bottling strength. Five start from a wheated mash and one from a rye mash, and the family picks the barrels for every one of them together with Buffalo Trace’s master distiller, Harlen Wheatley.
