American oak and sherry casks. The Glenlivet credits its American oak casks with tropical fruit and its ex-sherry casks with spice.

Batch Reserve on the band. The words Batch Reserve sit on the navy band low on the label of the current bottle, under the age statement.

A licence from 1824. In 1824 George Smith became the first distiller in the parish of Glenlivet to hold a legal licence, by The Glenlivet’s own account.

George Smith’s licence

George Smith became the first legal distiller in the parish of Glenlivet in 1824, taking one of the licences the Excise Act of 1823 had made available. His youngest son, John Gordon Smith, carried the distillery on, and in 1884 it secured the right to be the only whisky called The Glenlivet. The whisky is still made in the Livet Valley, in Speyside, by Chivas Brothers, part of Pernod Ricard.

Sensory Profile

In The Glenlivet’s US tasting note the 18 smells fragrant and layered, with oak, rich fruit and toffee. On the palate it is balanced: spice and bitter orange arrive together, then dry out on the oak, and the finish is long, with oak and spice.

Strategic Position

Among The Glenlivet’s 18, 21 and 25 Year Old, the next step up is the 21-year-old Glenlivet finished in sherry, cognac and port casks, reworked in 2022 for The Sample Room Collection. The 18 is matured in American oak and ex-sherry casks; the 21 is matured in traditional casks, finished in three more and bottled at 43% for the US.

The bottle and carton

The 2011 repackaging gave the 18 a heavier base and a permanent gift carton, and the 2019 redesign printed its label straight onto the bottle.
