Fall 2008 brought the eighth-from-last Sazerac 18 Year Old drawn from one stock of 1985 rye that had been moved from oak barrels into stainless steel tanks, a stock that lasted until the 2015 release. The 2008 bottling went out at 90 proof (45% ABV) under an 18-year age statement, and it and Eagle Rare 17 were the only 90-proof whiskeys in that year's Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.

Strategic Position

The Sazerac 18 was one of two ryes among the five whiskeys Buffalo Trace released for the fall 2008 edition of its long-running Antique Collection. The other, the uncut Handy released beside it, went out at 127.5 proof after six years and five months in cask; this bottle's rye had been distilled in 1985. George T. Stagg at 141.8 proof and William Larue Weller at 125.3 were also bottled far above 90, which left the Sazerac 18 and the seventeen-year Eagle Rare that year as the only 90-proof whiskeys of 2008.

Vault Provenance

1985 Distillation Tank Era

This bottle's tank-held 1985 rye also went into the 2006 release two falls earlier and into every Sazerac 18 from 2009 through 2015. For the next fall's 2009 draw, Buffalo Trace's announcement survives and describes a rye spice aroma with oak, leather and molasses.

Records & Assurance

Production Methodology

The Sazerac 18 released in 2008 came from rye distilled in 1985. After its years in oak barrels the rye was moved into stainless steel tanks, where it aged no further, and Sazerac 18 releases were drawn from those tanks until the 2015 release used the last of it; the 2008 portion was bottled at 90 proof under an 18-year age statement. Accounts of the stock give different years for the move into the tanks, and this page names no aging location, floor or grain percentages for the 2008 draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

How was the 2008 Sazerac 18 aged?

The 2008 Sazerac 18 Year Old came from rye distilled in 1985 that aged in oak barrels and was later moved into stainless steel tanks, where it aged no further. The 2008 bottling was the eighth-from-last Sazerac 18 drawn from that stock, which lasted until the 2015 release, and it was bottled at 90 proof under an 18-year age statement.

What proof is the 2008 Sazerac 18?

Buffalo Trace bottled the 2008 Sazerac 18 Year Old at 90 proof (45% ABV). Only one other whiskey in that fall's Antique Collection, Eagle Rare 17, shared that strength; the other three went out far higher, with George T. Stagg at 141.8 proof, Thomas H. Handy Sazerac at 127.5 and William Larue Weller at 125.3.

How does the 2008 Sazerac 18 compare with the 2009 release?

The 2008 and 2009 Sazerac 18 Year Old releases came from the same stock of 1985 rye held in stainless steel tanks, and both were bottled at 90 proof under an 18-year age statement, but each fall's draw was bottled separately. Buffalo Trace's 2009 announcement describes that year's draw as a rye spice aroma with oak, leather and molasses notes.
