Buffalo Trace's announcement of its fall 2009 Antique Collection placed the Sazerac 18 Year Old's aging on the first floor of Warehouse K and described its aroma as rye spice with oak, leather and molasses. The bottle holds 90-proof (45% ABV) Kentucky straight rye distilled in 1985 and later moved out of oak barrels into stainless steel tanks, the same stock that supplied the next six Sazerac 18 releases, ending with the 2015 bottling.

Buffalo Trace Distillery & Tank-Preserved Rye Heritage

Frankfort Historic 1985 Rye Vintages

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Distillery Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Rye spice carrying oak, leather, and molasses notes, as Buffalo Trace described the 2009 draw's aroma.
Palate: Rye spice, oak tannins, dark molasses, and sweet leather notes.
Finish: Long, dry, and elegant with lingering rye spice and dark molasses.

† Official tasting profile notes based on contemporaneous reviewer and distillery disclosures.

II

Strategic Position

Two of the five whiskeys in the 2009 edition of Buffalo Trace's autumn Antique Collection series were ryes, and both had aged in Warehouse K: this Sazerac 18 on the first floor, and the uncut Handy aged two floors higher, distilled in spring 2002 and bottled at 129 proof. George T. Stagg at 141.4 proof and William Larue Weller at 134.8 also went out far above 90, which left the Sazerac 18 and Eagle Rare 17 as the only 90-proof bottles of 2009.

Collector Note & Index

Vault Provenance

1985 Distillation Tank Era

Seven falls of Sazerac 18, 2009 through 2015, came from the tank-held 1985 rye in this bottle, and so did the fall 2008 bottling before it. Note that the 2010 Sazerac 18 aged on that same floor was written up as crisp spice, minty sweetness, and pleasant oakiness.

Records & Assurance

Production Methodology

Buffalo Trace's 2009 announcement places this whiskey's aging on the first floor of Warehouse K, a floor the distillery says ages barrels slowly. The rye was distilled in 1985. Once out of oak it went into stainless steel tanks, where aging stops, and a portion was drawn for each fall's Sazerac 18 until the 2015 release took the last of it; the 2009 portion was bottled at 90 proof. Accounts of the stock disagree on the year its barrels were emptied, and no grain percentages for this rye have been published.

Frequently Asked Questions

What proof is the 2009 Sazerac 18?

The 2009 Sazerac 18 Year Old was bottled at 90 proof, which is 45% alcohol by volume. In Buffalo Trace's 2009 Antique Collection, only the Sazerac 18 and Eagle Rare 17 were bottled at 90 proof; George T. Stagg came out at 141.4 proof, William Larue Weller at 134.8 and Thomas H. Handy Sazerac at 129.

What tasting notes did Buffalo Trace give the 2009 Sazerac 18?

Buffalo Trace's announcement of the 2009 Antique Collection gave the Sazerac 18 Year Old a rye spice aroma with oak, leather and molasses notes, and said the whiskey had aged on the first floor of Warehouse K. The announcement gave no separate palate or finish description for this release.

Is the 2009 Sazerac 18 really only 18 years old?

The 2009 Sazerac 18 Year Old carries an 18-year age statement, but its rye was distilled in 1985, 24 calendar years before the 2009 release. Part of that span was spent in stainless steel tanks rather than oak, and under US federal labeling rules a rye whisky's age counts only the time it was stored in charred new oak containers.
