Buffalo Trace's 2010 announcement placed the whiskey in the 2010 Sazerac 18 Year Old on the first floor of Warehouse K and described it as crisp spice, minty sweetness and pleasant oakiness. The rye itself was distilled in 1985 and held in stainless steel tanks after its barrel years; this 90-proof release was the sixth-from-last drawn from that reserve, which ran out with the 2015 bottling.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Distillery Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Crisp spice, minty sweetness, subtle oak, and refined caramel.
Palate: Crisp spice with minty sweetness, the core of Buffalo Trace's one-line 2010 description.
Finish: Pleasant oakiness closing a clean, dry, and balanced rye finish.

† Official tasting profile notes based on contemporaneous reviewer and distillery disclosures.

II

Strategic Position

The 2010 set split three to two on strength: George T. Stagg at 143 proof, William Larue Weller at 126.6 and the spring-2004 Handy bottled that fall at 126.9 went out uncut, while the Sazerac 18 and the spring-1993 Eagle Rare 17 that year were bottled at 90 proof. Against the Handy's spring-2004 rye, the Sazerac 18 carried a stock distilled in 1985. Midnight Whiskey files both ryes under the Antique Collection's year-by-year releases.

Production Methodology

This bottling draws on rye distilled in 1985. Buffalo Trace's 2010 announcement places its maturation on the first floor of Warehouse K, a floor the distillery describes as slow-aging, and the whiskey was later held in stainless steel tanks, where it took on no further barrel age. Portions of that reserve became each fall's Sazerac 18 until the 2015 release; the 2010 portion was bottled at 90 proof. Published dates for the tanking do not agree, and the rye's grain percentages have not been published.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

What does the 2010 Sazerac 18 taste like?

Buffalo Trace described the 2010 Sazerac 18 Year Old as having a crisp spice, minty sweetness and pleasant oakiness, in a single flavor line rather than separate nose, palate and finish notes. Its 2010 announcement gives no other tasting detail for this rye, which was bottled at 90 proof.
